historically, the pocket was the precursor to the handbag. they were made as separate pouches that tied around the waist, worn over or beneath full skirts.

our cotton jacket with pockets, the warm jacket is a reimagining of our classic big stan jacket for fall and winter, there are wrist length sleeves and two large welt flap pockets and one ticket pocket, lined with warm brushed cotton.

we adore pockets; pockets in various shapes and sizes, crafted into conventional and surprising places, internal and external. both functional and decorative, they contribute significantly to sula’s signature style with its focus on everyday ease.  we find inspiration from historical and modern menswear, workwear and occupational dress. for autumn/winter 2025-26 we feature flap patch pockets for securing and safeguarding precious items; welt pockets which the hands easily slide into, ticket and jetted pockets. sula designer, alison taylor, found a vintage pair of french 1930s workwear pants in an amazing store – sunless antiques in hastings, we took inspiration from the pockets for our french painter pants, sending to our factory in vietman to study.

a pocket, ticket size or roomy, adds to the making time and price of a garment, the intricate pockets on our french painter pants would add up to 20 minutes onto the construction time per pocket. we believe  – and our clients assure us – it is entirely worthwhile.
