sula is a small scale business – just two permanent employees, hannah and kate and, designer-owner alison taylor. we work from a domestic space, snuggled beneath the south downs, overlooking the sea. there is a pumpkin field behind us. we grow vegetables and cutting flowers in our garden and dry our garment washed clothes and dyed fabric lengths on the line out there too. 

in the latest instalment of our profile series, we introduce jakki, who has been our u.s. agent since 2024 when she set up her own business. jakki tells us about her professional role and personal relationship with sula.

“in the depth of my soul i understand sula. i experience the clothes viscerally; i wash, i wear, i mend them…” 

“i work as the intermediary between the designer and the retailer. i’m not a wholesaler. i collaborate with both parties. as sula’s U.S agent i cover a huge geographic spread and diverse demographic. sula has a growing fan base here.

i met alison about 15 years ago and was already wearing sula on a daily basis. i have a pants fixation and particularly adore tin pants and 404 flare pants. i am wearing the latter in new york today, made in the amazing new japanese denim fabric. i’m also loving wearing the malin vests which keep my body warm and look good. and, i also run around the city wearing a dress – i like the cotton satin –  with sneakers that takes me through to evening too. my daughter also likes sula as do the twenty and thirty year olds i work with; they wear organza, frida skirt and sweet blouse.

alison is a brilliant colourist; she has a superpower! she just understands colour – it’s depth, what goes together… i share that with alison; colour is like good food for me. i can’t wait to see her colour card each season. sula sells in selected high-end boutiques across the u.s., but she is such a california brand. they just love her clothes! my role is not to just help grow the brand but make sure sula is sold in the right places.”
