Thames quilted skirt is redolent of an 18th century petticoat, this skirt is made using a luxurious cotton (50%) silk (50%) mix cloth, cotton wadding and brushed cotton lining. It has been hand-quilted in self-coloured thread to create a harlequin diamond design. It is a weighty garment that is (perhaps surprisingly) flattering. Side-fastening with hand-made and hand-painted buttons, hand worked loops and extended, hand plaited, silk ties.
The scalloped, hemline had been hand-worked by a small family Vietnamese workshop, from whom we also work with for drawn thread work items. One worker will have spent at least two days hand quilting the skirt and intricately stitching this hem.
Historically garments were quilted to provide warmth. We also need cosy garments today!
